Via Crucis is a half-length figure of Christ painted in traditional Byzantine icon painting style. The painting depicts Christ looking directly at the viewer with his right hand raised in blessing. The artwork is regarded as a forerunner of both Cubism and Expressionism and is a part of a multipart altarpiece commissioned for the convent of Santo Domingo el Antiguo in Toledo. El Greco, a master of post-Byzantine art, lived in Toledo for most of his life which is also the view depicted in the background of the painting.
