The artwork titled “The Nativity. From the Festive Row of the Main Iconostasis of the Assumption Cathedral of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra,” created in 1729 by Orthodox Icons, belongs to the Kyiv school of icon painting. Measuring 118 x 32 cm, this piece is part of the Evangelical cycle series and is classified within the genre of icons. Currently, the artwork is housed in the National Art Museum of Ukraine (NAMU) in Kyiv, Ukraine.
The artwork portrays the nativity scene with a traditional Orthodox iconography style. At the center, the infant Jesus is depicted lying in a crib, with the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph positioned near Him. Surrounding this sacred scene are various figures, including shepherds and angels, each depicted with intricate detail and rich coloration. The use of light and shadow, along with evocative expressions and gestures, adds a profound spiritual atmosphere to the depiction. Above the central scene, an angelic presence is noted, highlighting the divine significance of the event. Key symbols, such as the ox and donkey, are also included, adhering to the traditional elements found in nativity iconography.
