“The Cloud Dormition,” created by Orthodox Icons between c.1200 and c.1225, is a tempera-on-wood artwork from the Novgorod school of icon painting. This iconographic piece, measuring 155 by 128 cm, is part of the series “Holidays and Events of Sacred History” and belongs to the genre of religious icons.
The artwork captures a revered scene known as the Dormition (or Assumption) of the Virgin Mary, a significant event within the Christian tradition. Mary, depicted with a serene and peaceful visage, lies on a bier, surrounded by apostles and other figures, possibly saints, bishops, and angels. At the center above her, stands Christ holding an infant, symbolizing the soul of Mary.
