Saint George (c.1200 – c.1300) by Orthodox Icons

The artwork titled “Saint George” by the artist attributed to “Orthodox Icons” was created approximately between 1200 and 1300, during the period of the Latin Empire of Constantinople (1204-1261). This piece belongs to the icon genre, and it forms part of the “Saints” series. Currently, it is housed in the Byzantine and Christian Museum in Athens, Greece.

The artwork depicts Saint George, a significant figure in Christian iconography, known for his role as a warrior saint. The central figure is adorned in armor, with a cloak draped over his shoulders, and a halo signifying his sanctity encircles his head. His stance is one of piety, with hands raised in a gesture of prayer or blessing. Surrounding the main figure are numerous smaller scenes, also executed in the iconographic style, that appear to narrate the story of Saint George’s life and martyrdom. The background and bordering scenes are rendered in vibrant yet slightly faded colors, characteristic of the time-worn nature of medieval icons. The use of gold leaf accents in the halo and background highlights the divine and revered nature of the saint. The meticulous attention to detail and the stylistic elements reflect the religious and cultural context of the Byzantine art tradition.
