Robert Diebenkorn was an American painter born on 22 April 1922 in Portland, Oregon. Richard’s parents were unsupportive of their son’s interest in art, leaving the young Diebenkorn with only one source of encouragement – his grandmother. A former painter and poet herself, Richard’s grandmother helped his early development by taking him to art galleries and giving him art books.
In 1940, Diebenkorn began his studies at Stanford University, studying art and art history and graduating in 1949. Richard also received art education at the California School of Fine Arts. in the early 1950s, Diebenkorn and his family moved to Albuquerque, where he enrolled at the University of New Mexico for his Master’s degree.
In 1967, Diebenkorn moved with his family to Santa Monica and became an art professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. His moment of national spotlight came through his Ocean Park series, a set of artworks combining techniques of two art movements. Diebenkorn died on 30 March 1993 in Berkeley, California.
