Jean-Antoine Watteau – Artwork & Bio of the French Painter

Jean-Antoine Watteau was a French painter born on October 10, 1684, in Valenciennes, France. Watteau studied under Jacques-Albert Gerin in Valenciennes before traveling to Paris in 1702 to further his education. Unable to find an art teacher, Watteau initially made copies of the Old Masters’ works for art dealers.

Watteau started studying under Claude Gillot, a designer and draftsman, in 1704. Gillot taught Watteau for almost four years before the pair broke apart. Afterward, Jean-Antoine entered the atelier of Claude Audran III, who became a pivotal figure in his success. He left Audran’s studio in 1709 after about four years of studying.

That same year, Watteau participated in the Prix de Rome competition at the Academie Royale de Painting et de Sculpture and won second place. Disappointed not to win first place and achieve his dream of traveling to Italy, Watteau returned to Valenciennes. On his return to Paris in 1712, he became a full Academician and gained worldwide recognition and acclaim. He died on July 18, 1721, in Nogent-sur-Marne, France.
