Jacob van Ruisdael, known for his landscapes, is considered the foremost landscape painter of the Dutch Golden Age. Born in Haarlem, Netherlands in 1628 or 1629 to a family of artists, he received his training from his father and uncle. Throughout his career, he produced hundreds of works that showed his mastery over light and atmosphere.
Ruisdael’s paintings created a poetic and sometimes melancholic mood that conveyed the grandeur and power of nature. His art often showcased brooding forests with gnarled trees that twisted into darkness at their edges. Nevertheless, there were also bright landscapes saturated with sunlight.
While Ruisdael did not find commercial success during his lifetime, after his death he inspired Romantic painters like J.M.W Turner. Even today, art lovers and scholars recognise him as one of the best landscape painters of all time.
