Gian Lorenzo Bernini Biography and Artwork

Gian Lorenzo Bernini, born on December 7, 1598, in Naples, Italy, was an esteemed Italian artist and architect from the 17th century. From a young age, he was already considered a prodigy like his father Pietro Bernini – who was also a famed sculptor. Bernini spent most of his adult life in Rome where he made significant contributions to the creation of the Baroque style in sculpture.

Renowned for his innovative interpretation and use of forms and combination of media, Bernini revolutionized sculptural and architectural projects. He gained patronage from cardinals and popes alike through his extraordinary artistic talent that dominated the art scene.

Bernini’s works include sculptures, architecture, painting, and drawing that can be seen worldwide in various museums. He is known for influencing other artists such as Johann Georg Pinzel with his Baroque style of sculpture since he was considered a successor to Michelangelo himself.

One of Bernini’s famous pieces is the bust of Costanza Bonarelli – created between 1636-1638. His legacy still lives on after his death in November 28th 1680 at Rome by ensuring that future generations continue to learn about him and appreciate his unique contribution to art history.
