Anselm Kiefer was a prominent figure in the Neo-Expressionist movement of the late 20th century. He incorporated unique materials such as straw, ash, clay, lead, and shellac into his works to create a texture that defied tradition. His works often explored themes of German history, mythology, and expressed the ambivalence of his generation toward German nationalism.
A post-war Germany identity heavily influenced both Kiefer’s life and work. The artist originally studied law before committing himself to his art in 1966. Kiefer’s practice included painting, sculpture, installation, and photography. He drew inspiration from European mythos and literature as well as the poetry of Paul Celan.
However it was in the 1980s when he rose to international prominence with controversial critiques on censorship regarding post-war Germany’s Nazi past. Through art he aimed to navigate through this tumultuous period engulfing German society till today.
Anselm Kiefer is widely recognized for his large-scale pieces which reflected a deep understanding of history while challenging contemporary interpretations simultaneously. Even though he passed away recently,his impact still resonates throughout contemporary art movements around the world today due to making an indelible mark on what it means for an artist to be “German” nowadays.
