This article discusses the Crucified Christ With Saint John The Evangelist, The Virgin, And Saints Dominic And Jerome, a religious painting created by Fra Angelico between 1439-1443. This early Renaissance style painting is made of panel and tempera and is now located at Fogg Museum (Harvard Art Museums), Cambridge, MA, US.
The painting depicts the Crucifixion scene with four people: Christ, Virgin Mary, Saint John the Evangelist, and Saints Dominic and Jerome. Fra Angelico excluded other traditional figures in the composition to focus on these four figures. This decision highlights his artistic style of using quiet contemplation to depict religious subjects.
As a Dominican friar and painter, not only did Fra Angelico make this wonderful piece focusing on these key individuals but he also created two additional altarpieces for the church this painting was attached to as well without being paid for his work. Though he did not get compensated for his efforts monetarily does not take away from its significance in art history.
