Saint Michael (c.1350) by Orthodox Icons

The artwork titled “Saint Michael,” created around c.1350 by the artist known under the collective designation “Orthodox Icons,” belongs to the Late Byzantine/Palaeologan Renaissance art movement (c. 1261–1453). This piece is categorized within the genre of iconography and is part of the series dubbed “Angels and Ethereal Powers.” It is currently housed in the Byzantine and Christian Museum located in Athens, Greece.

The artwork is a striking depiction of Saint Michael, characterized by the austere and mystical aesthetic typical of Byzantine iconography. Displayed with traditional elements, Saint Michael is presented with a solemn expression, holding a staff in one hand and a sphere, marked with Greek letters, in the other, symbolizing his divine authority and protection. His wings, dark and meticulously detailed, accentuate his ethereal nature, while the warm, rich hues of his garments subtly highlight his celestial status. The weathered texture of the artwork and the faint inscriptions enhance its historical and sacred aura.
